I have had the opportunity of having 4 different internships during my 3 year college career at PLU. Below I describe where I held the internships and what I did at each of them.
MediaLab: MediaLab is an invitation-only internship program through Pacific Lutheran University’s School of Arts and Communication. An award-winning student media organization, MediaLab works with clients in various industries, in the fields of journalism, public relations, marketing, videography, photography and graphic design.
I was accepted in the Spring semester of 2010. I served as a reporter and producer on many projects for a variety of clients. I wrote stories, produced videos, took photographs and more.
As of February 2012, I was the Journalism Team Leader. I oversaw the projects of other members on the Journalism team, acting as a guide and editor for their work.
I was an Associate Producer for MediaLab’s most recent documentary, “Overexposed: The Cost of Compassion,” which explores the topic of “compassion fatigue” and the complexities of caring.
The Liberty Lake Splash: The Liberty Lake Splash is a small weekly community newspaper in Liberty Lake, Washington, about 20 minutes east of downtown Spokane. This free newspaper serves the city of roughly 7,000 residents. I interned at the Splash during the summer of 2010.
I reported on a variety of different events and even had the opportunity to try my hand at photography. This was the first place that I took pictures that were published in a newspaper.
The Puyallup Herald: The Puyallup Herald is a weekly newspaper that serves Puyallup, Washington and neighboring communities. I interned at the Herald during January 2011.
I got to report on everything from the restoration of a mansion, to the seasonal specialties of a tea room, to a therapy dog that visits residents of an assisted living community. It was here that I further developed the writing skills that I first stretched while interning at the Splash. I saw a substantial improvement in my work.
KING 5 Television: KING 5 Television, a subsidiary of Belo Corporation based in Seattle, is Western Washington’s news leader. I served as a digital media intern at KING 5 from February to May 2012. I wrote stories for the Web, posted stories, cut video, took and prepared photos, etc.
I learned a lot about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), how to effectively write stories and headlines for the Web, content management systems, and other specifics about the online news business.
